How can I get involved?

One of the major ways you can get involved at SCAR is by volunteering.  We are in constant need for all types of volunteers at our shelter,  for fundraisers and as fosters. Volunteering with SCAR can be an extremely rewarding opportunity to give back to the community as well as yourself.  By volunteering at our shelter you not only get the satisfaction of caring for potential SCAR grads but you also play a key role in preparing them for their forever home.  Volunteering also gives you chance to discover new skills you never knew you had, grow confidence and meet new and amazing people who share the same likes!

If you want to volunteer at our Windsor Terrace shelter and learn more about the rescue:

The Anti-Cruelty Society

What is the Anti-Cruelty Society?

The Anti-Cruelty Society has been providing shelter and medical care to hundreds of thousands of animals since 1899. This is only possible thanks to hard-working, dedicated individuals who share a passion for helping animals and the people who love them. Volunteers have long been a backbone of the Society, providing much-needed assistance in every department to ensure that the shelter continues to operate smoothly and that the animals in our care stay happy and healthy while they wait for their forever homes. We encourage anyone—of any age—to volunteer! If you love animals and want to help, we have a number of different programs for you to participate in.

ASPCA

What is the ASPCA?

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world.

Our organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend our anti-cruelty mission across the country, we are recognized as a national animal welfare organization. We are a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and are proud to boast more than 2 million supporters across the country.

The ASPCA’s mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”

How can I get involved?

Volunteering at the ASPCA in New York City connects the people in our communities to the ASPCA’s mission to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.

Our primary need is for a volunteer role called Shelter Support. This critical role directly supports our operations. Shelter Support volunteers assist with daily care tasks under the guidance of Integrated Care Assistants.

While providing shelter support, volunteers will assist with:

  1. Laundry
  2. Sorting donated goods
  3. Stripping and cleaning empty animal enclosures
  4. Stocking supplies
  5. Washing and sanitizing dishes
  6. Washing transport cages
  7. And additional support as needed
  8. Shelter Support volunteer tasks will necessitate that the volunteer be able to stand unassisted for up to three hours and be able to lift up to 35 pounds.

Guided by diverse and dedicated ASPCA staff members, volunteers act in partnership to improve animals’ lives in direct and impactful ways. ASPCA volunteers form a vital network of informed animal welfare advocates who are empowered to share their experience and knowledge with ASPCA clients and visitors, and their friends, families and neighbors, to build safer and more humane communities for animals.

Volunteers must be 16 years of age. https://www.aspca.org/get-involved/volunteer/volunteer-aspca-adoption-center
